Rita Mariana Moreno Urquidi recognized as SENMC Student of the year
In Fall 2025, Southeast New Mexico College established the Mountain Lion Student of the Month and Student of the Year awards to recognize students who exemplify the college’s core values of Persistence, Resilience, Respect, Resourcefulness, Inclusion, Integrity, Diversity, and Excellence. Throughout the academic year, students are nominated by faculty and staff for their leadership, service, academic achievement, and positive contributions to the campus community. From the monthly recipients, one student is selected annually as the Mountain Lion Student of the Year, representing the very best of Southeast New Mexico College. The Student of the Year recipient is awarded a commemorative medallion and a $500 scholarship in recognition of their outstanding accomplishments and contributions to the college community.
Southeast New Mexico College proudly recognizes Rita Mariana Moreno Urquidi as the Inaugural Student of the Year. She is an exceptional student leader whose dedication to service, academic achievement, and campus involvement continues to make a meaningful impact across the college and community.
Mariana has distinguished herself through her commitment to leadership and student advocacy. She currently serves as the Vice President of Fellowship for the Alpha Rho Xi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), where she has played an integral role in supporting chapter initiatives, encouraging student engagement, and promoting scholarship and service among her peers. In addition to her work with PTK, Mariana also serves as a member of Student Government and as the student representative on the CLIFFS Honor Council, demonstrating her commitment to representing and supporting students across campus.
One of Mariana’s most remarkable accomplishments has been the creation and continued development of a disability support group for families within the community. What began as a classroom project quickly evolved into a sustainable initiative that provides support, resources, and encouragement for families navigating disabilities. Her ability to identify a community need and transform an idea into meaningful action reflects her compassion, initiative, and leadership. Mariana’s efforts and contributions have earned significant recognition throughout the academic year. She was selected as Student of the Month in October, an honor recognizing students who exemplify the institution’s core values of resilience, integrity, inclusion, and excellence.
Faculty and staff consistently describe Mariana as a student who leads with empathy, determination, and positivity. She approaches challenges with resilience and creativity while continuously encouraging and uplifting those around her. Her strong work ethic and dedication to service make her an inspiring example of student leadership and academic success.
Southeast New Mexico College is proud to celebrate Mariana’s accomplishments and looks forward to the continued positive impact she will make both on campus and within the broader community.
