Academic Advising
From your first semester through graduation or transfer, academic advising is invaluable resource to help you reach your goals. Advisors work with students to select and enroll in classes, understand academic program requirements, develop graduation plans, and connect with campus resources.

How to Prepare for Your Appointment
Before your first appointment, make sure that your admissions status is tentative or final, you have an active myNMSU account, have completed NMSU Respects, and if needed have taken the Accuplacer test; completion of these tasks ensures that you can register for classes. Note that testing may be waived for students who have completed the ACT within the last year or are transferring in college-level math, reading, or English courses. If you are a new student, please select Virtual as the location & New Student Advising as the service when scheduling your appointment. Continuing students can select whichever service matches best with what you want to cover in your appointment.Due to the circumstances of the COVID-19 Pandemic, We are unable to take “drop-ins” or “walk-ins” at this time, please be sure to make an appointment and be patient with us as we work through any technology issues that may arise.
- Virtual Advising Appointment: Preferred option! Similar to a traditional advising appointment. You’ll need to be at a computer with audio (and visual if you want to video chat) to use this option. You do not have to use the video option if you don’t want to. (Select “Carlsbad Academic Advising- Virtual (Microsoft Teams, preferred method)” as the location when you are scheduling an appointment.)
- A Phone Call via the Teams Mobile Application: This is the best option if you do not have access to a computer AND can download the Teams mobile application. Teams is included for free with your university Office 365 (Select “Carlsbad Academic Advising- Virtual (Microsoft Teams, preferred method)” as the location when you are scheduling an appointment.)
- Traditional Phone Call: Due to our inability to have phone calls transferred from our office phones & privacy issues, please only use this option if you do not have a smart phone. Be aware that your caller id may say “Restricted”/”No Caller ID”/Etc when we call in order to protect employee privacy. Your advisor will call you at your scheduled appointment time. (Select “Carlsbad Academic Advising- Phone” as the location when you are scheduling an appointment & be sure to include the phone number you wish to be reached at.
