Starting My College Journey: How a College Success Course Helped Me Build Confidence and Find Belonging

When I first enrolled at NMSU-Carlsbad (now known as Southeast New Mexico College ) in 2015, I was unsure of what to expect. Like many first-generation students, I was filled with a mix of excitement and nervousness about starting college. However, taking the College 101 course as part of my first semester was a transformative experience. That course gave me the foundation I needed to believe in myself and understand that I had the ability to succeed. 

The class not only helped me get organized but also gave me the confidence to navigate college life. It introduced me to the resources and support systems at the institution, such as academic advising, tutoring, and financial aid services. Through this course, I learned how to use these resources effectively, which made all the difference in my college journey. I realized that asking for help was not a sign of weakness but a strength in itself. I was able to connect with the staff and faculty, who became mentors and a vital part of my academic success. More importantly, it made me feel like I belonged here at SENMC.

Having this sense of belonging made all the difference. It was through the College 101 class that I started forming meaningful relationships with my professors and peers. The course helped me see that I was not alone and that I had people at SENMC who were there to support me every step of the way. It laid the groundwork for the confidence I would need to pursue my bachelor’s degree after I left SENMC. After finishing my studies, I returned to the very same institution that helped me grow, and this time as a staff member, working to give back and support students in the same way I was supported.

Now, as I work with students in the FYEX 1111: Introduction to College Studies class, I see how it can help them build the same foundation I did. The skills and resources students gain through this course are crucial in helping them succeed during their time at SENMC. I truly believe that this course sets students up for a successful college experience and provides the tools they need to navigate both academic challenges and personal growth.
