STEAM Expo
STEAM EXPO
Southeast New Mexico College will be hosting a STEAM Expo on April 13th, 2023 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. SENMC students and agencies in the fields of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math will be presenting their latest projects and activity tables. Students will be able to observe engineering projects, chemistry experiments, art projects, biology demonstrations, the microscopic world, and so much more. The SENMC Grants Department Project Director, Rocio Espinoza stated, “The main reason we are doing this is that we want to demonstrate and offer our community the opportunity to know what STEAM and STEAM careers do here for the community. We have a lot of students that don’t want to leave Carlsbad. However, they don’t want to go into the restaurant business or retail industry. So by promoting the STEAM programs and all the agencies attending, we are contributing to building the fields of engineering, art, and STEAM careers in general. We are encouraging students and community members to pursue higher education or go back to school to have opportunities for a career in STEM. People think that STEM is just engineering or mathematics, but it is so much bigger than that. So our main focus is to make sure that they know what STEAM careers are, and engage in them by going into a STEAM career.”
When asked about the motivation behind events such as these Espinoza stated that “It goes back to promoting what the STEAM field is. The capability of what a STEAM career can do and how it can benefit our community. The more ingrown professionals we have here in the community, the more our community will grow and raise the percentage of people with a degree. A lot of things go back to how it is going to benefit us in the long run for our community because students can go out to other universities, but they can always come back and use those skills and degrees within the community to help us become not only a better, but larger community.”
She ended by saying, “Our main goal is to make sure that everyone in Carlsbad and the surrounding areas know that the campus is a main resource, and we want to promote that. There are a lot of things we can do here at the college. We are offering all of these resources to the community so that we can grow to become a better and more stable community in the future.”
